The search begins for Rhode Island's top youth volunteers of 2013

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program is looking for Rhode Island's top youth volunteers of 2013.

Now through Nov. 6, Rhode Island students in grades 5-12 who have volunteered in the past 12 months are invited to apply for 2013 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards by visiting http://spirit.prudential.com and www.nassp.org/spirit.

Rhode Island's top youth volunteers of 2012 were Sandanie Ambalangodage, 18, of Smithfield and Nicholas Lowinger, 14, of Cranston. As State Honorees, Sandanie and Nicholas received $1,000 awards, engraved silver medallions, and all-expense-paid trips to Washington, D.C.

The awards, sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), have been granted annually since 1995 to recognize middle and high school students for helping the less fortunate, promoting health and safety, protecting the environment, or volunteering in other ways.
