Avengers Pass Tough Test, Advance to Semi's

Melnick, Goodwin lead Avengers past Mount

East Greenwich got two goals from senior Anthony Melnick to defeat Mount St. Charles 2-1 in the Division-2 quarterfinals Saturday. For the fourth-consecutive year, the Avengers will play in the semi-finals, which will take place on their home field Monday night versus Tolman.

Mount St. Charles, playing their aggressive style of play, took control of the pace early. Just eight minutes into the game, senior Evan Traumuller put a shot past EG goalie Oscar Goodwin for a 1-0 advantage. Paolo Roche got loose from an EG defender and was able to get a high shot off past Goodwin. The shot ricocheted off the crossbar, and Traumuller was able to control the rebound and release a shot past Goodwin’s outstretched hands.

“We came out playing very aggressively, getting two or three players after every ball and it worked for us in the first half,” said Mount coach Miles Henderson.

Mount’s physical style led to a large advantage in time of possession. The Mounties peppered Goodwin with shots from every distance and angle, including some very dangerous blasts from midfielder Timothy Stein.

Just past the midway point of the first half however, EG’s Melnick won a 50/50 ball coming off of a corner kick, dribbled out in front and buried the first EG shot of the game into the back of the net to tie the game at one.

After some struggle in the first half, EG came out more agressively in the second half.

The spark came from freshman forward Peter Goretoy, who was inserted midway through the second half.

“(Goretoy) started the year on the JV, he’s a good athlete and he can run all day,” said EG coach Pat McGuirl. “Our guys are tired and beat up, they’ve played a lot of games and he was able to come on and give us a spark off the bench.”

Goretoy’s biggest contribution came on the go ahead goal that began on a give and go between freshman midfielder Tyler Amaral. Amaral was able to take a quick pass into the corner from Goretoy and take a defender with him from the middle of the field. Melnick took advantage of the opening and hit a one-timer past Mount goalie Geoff Cicatiello.

Mount’s best opportunity to create a tie came on a failed attempt by EG’s defense to draw Traumuller offsides just before Melnick’s second goal.  Traumuller was unable to control the through ball in time before Goodwin made his way out of the net and Traumuller’s quick shot missed the net by inches.

Game Notes

Mount got 18 shots, 11 of them getting on net ... Goodwin made 10 saves to Cicatiello’s 6 … This was the first meeting of the season between the two teams … EGHS’s Carcieri Field will be hosting both semifinal games for Division 2 on Monday night, one game at 5 p.m. and another at 7 p.m.
