Board Of Regents, Cole Mile & More Playoffs
Five things you need to know about East Greenwich today, June 2:
Board of Regents meeting: The Department of Education’s Board of Regents meets at Cole Middle School today from 4 to 6pm, part of its policy to move the meeting to different communities around the state. It could be crowded, if supporters of Cranston Mayor Alan Fung turn out for the charter school discussion. Fung has proposed establishing five charter schools to serve students in Cranston and Providence. The agenda is posted as a pdf with this story.
Cole Mile: This is year six of the Cole Mile, the all-school road race. First there’s the faculty-student race (at 8:20am), then the seventh graders take on the course (at 8:45), and finally the eighth graders show their stuff (at 9:30). Ah, but that’s not all … there’s a staff race, a lunch cookout, and activities from ultimate frisbee to capture the flag. The day ends with relays and tug-a-war and, later at home, a collapse unto the sofa!
Baseball: Last night’s weather (tornado warnings! hail in Providence!) caused all sorts of delays, including in the first of the EG-Cranston West playoff series. The game was called at 9:30pm in the bottom of the third with EG was down 8-2. Play resumes today at McCarthy Stadium in West Warwick.
Lacrosse: The girls playoff game against Barrington originally scheduled for last night was postponed to today at 4pm at Rhode Island College.
Senior Sports Banquet: For many spring senior athletes, the season is going strong, but the annual banquet to honor senior athletes happens tonight starting at 6:30 at the Quonset O Club. Sponsored by the Booster Club, the evening is made especially memorable by the still and video footage compiled by yearbook advisor Paula Glod.
