Sunday marks the 19th year in a row that the Harbourside and other Water Street restaurants have held canoe races on the cove to raise money for Special Olympics.
According to Harbourside Asst. Manager Vickie Brisco, it started because restaurant owners wanted to do something collectively. Initially, it was Harbourside Lobstermania, The Blue Parrot (where Nautika is now), and 20 Water Street (now Blu on the Water). Each establishment had their own activity – Harbourside had the canoe races and that's the one the stuck.
Teams of four must paddle the canoe from the Harbourside, where registration takes place, up to Blu and back again. There will be five heats and registration costs $25 per person. Canoes are provided. The money goes to Special Olympics.
Richard's Pub is the fourth restaurant sponsor.
There's no preregistration, so all you have to do now is line up your team ... and don't sleep in too late Sunday morning!
