If ended up being a perfect day for a parade - after the torrents of Thursday, Friday dawned cool but sunny. And the crowds turned out, lining the parade every step of the way, but particularly on Main Street.

Grand Marshal Robert Houghtaling - veteran of the Korean War - led the parade together with bagpiper and EGHS alum Aaron Lindo. Houghtaling spoke of the crowd's warmth during his speech at Town Hall, where the parade ended. He also urged the crowd to continue to acknowledge veterans from World War II all the way to continuing conflicts in Iraq and Afganistan.

One of the things I love about living in East Greenwich is that we have a Veteran's Day and Memorial Day parades and that so many people either participate in or watch them!

To whom it may concern:
the photos of the town's two historic military units are labeled incorrectly. The red, white and blue uniforms with bearskin crested helmets are the Kentish Guards, whose uniforms are late 1790s uniforms, not the Varnum Continentals. The Varnum Continentals wear 1779 Continental Army style uniforms -- blue coats with white lapels, white breeches and black gaiters.

On Nov. 11th 1958, I marched with the Kentish Guards for the first time when the holiday was called Armistice Day. I was 14 years old at that time. On Nov. 11, 2011 marked my 53rd year with the Kentish Guards and I noticed I appeared at the beginning of the video in my Kentish Guard uniform. Hopefully, I'll be able to continue marching for at least another twenty years!

I love the Veteran's Day parade in East Greenwich. The children enjoy all the parade activity, and we enjoy being able to spend some time with our neighbors on Main Street!

A parade would not be a parade if it weren't for all those who come out and watch. Thanks to all who marched as well as those who participated behind the scenes.
