EG Track Club Steps Out With Bunny Hop 5K
Mark your calendar now — the Goddard Park fun run takes place April 14.
For a lot of years now, track in East Greenwich got no respect, as Rodney Dangerfield would say. Even with talent like Nick Ross (Class of 2010) and the current girls 4x4 relay team (3-time state champions), EG runners have been on the down low.
That's changing, with running enthusiasts and parents getting involved to hold the first-ever Bunny Hop 5K on April 14 in Goddard Park. It's taking place under the auspices of the newly-formed East Greenwich Track Club.
Cole P.E. teacher and EGHS track coach Peter Dion has been beating the drum for track and cross country for years. Now that EGHS has a new track, it seemed a good time, organizers thought, to push involvement in the sport.
The 5K course will be familiar to those who've run 5Ks at Goddard before. It promises to be a fun event. Money raised at this race will be used to sponsor a summer youth track series, offering all kids the opportunity to participate.
The new group is also promoting track and field through “Wild Wednesdays,” where kids will be grouped by age and have an opportunity to participate and compete in the different track and field events, with both coaching and teaching.
The Bunny Hop 5k Run/Walk Road Race (which will feature a costume contest and an egg hunt) will help promote these and other programs of fitness and wellness among the youth of East Greenwich.
