The animals of the East Greenwich Animal Protection League went Hollywood on successive Saturdays in January. Paired with professional models and local celebrities — including our own Mary Larsen of The Rhode Show — the animals were photographed and those “Animal Prints” will be auctioned off to benefit the EGAPL Saturday night.

The event was the brainchild of EGAPL volunteer Kim Kalunian, whose involvement with the league started a year ago, when she contacted them about using a shelter dog in the Rhode Island Youth Theatre’s production of “Annie.”

“In October 2010, my own dog passed away,” Kalunian explained. “I’m a huge animal lover. Without my own dog, I was looking for a way to sort of be active in the animal community. With the whole Buddy thing, I thought it was a cool idea to use a shelter dog.”

Buddy was the name of the dog who acted the part of Sandy in the show. He ended up needing an expensive surgery in addition to a home and the story was picked up by news outlets across the state.

In the end, David and Irene Azzinaro of Saunderstown adopted Buddy. They were back with Buddy on a snowy Saturday in January so that he could be reunited with his “Annie” for a photo shoot at Crestar Frame Company. Mary Larsen was there that Saturday to be photographed with one of the shelter animals too.

Not only were all the photo shoots done at Crestar, but the Saturday evening auction will take place there as well. There will be a raffle, door prizes, desserts, champagne, wine, and — of course — dogs on Saturday.

“How can you say no to the Animal Protection League?” said Crestar owner Jason Dittleman.  “I mean, I’m a dog lover and we have the space. It helps get us a little exposure and it raises money for a good cause.”

The event takes place Saturday, Feb. 11, from 7 to 10 p.m. It will be a silent auction and there is a suggested donation of $10 to attend.
