Elementary Schools Bring an Asian Twist to Classic Cinderella Story

Separate Productions of “Yeh-Shen” on Stage this Weekend

The ancient Far East comes to East Greenwich as both Meadowbrook Farms and Frenchtown elementary schools take the classic Cinderella story back to its roots in ancient China with a unique version entitled "Yeh-Shen." To combine resources, the two schools will both put on the same production this year.

Both schools will hold performances at the East Greenwich High School Auditorium on Friday, November 12, and Saturday, November 13. The Frenchtown productions will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Meadowbrook show times are 7:30 p.m. on Friday and 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets to all shows are available at the door for $5 each or $20 per family.

"Yeh-Shen," a Chinese version of the tale almost a thousand years older than the earliest known European version, contains many familiar details – a poor over-worked girl, a wicked step-family, a magical helper, royalty, and a lost shoe. Yet while telling the same 'rags-to-riches' story, the production includes a completely different look and style taken from Chinese culture. From ninja mice to Chinese-inspired costumes, family members of all ages and genders will find something appealing in the production.

The production starring kindergarten through third grade students at the schools is directed by Valerie Myette, who has directed musicals at both schools in the past.

With the help of PTG volunteers, all of child actors involved have not only learned their lines, but about Chinese culture. The schools have invited Chinese guest lecturers in, taught Chinese traditions and hosted a themed art contest.

"The 'Yeh-Shen' production is unlike anything we've done before," commented Myette. "The children have a unique, two-fold opportunity to learn theater skills as well as learn about another culture – including language and traditions. They've really embraced the production and the culture."

Gabriella Weathers, who plays the role of Yeh-Shen at Meadowbrook, looks forward to her favorite part of the production, her solo rendition of "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes."

According to Gabriella, "It's actually very true sometimes."
