Five Things: Presidents, Winter Break
Your guide for life in East Greenwich today, Feb 18.
Presidents’ Day – what's closed: Banks and government offices are closed today. Most everything else is open. The holiday was established in 1885 to honor George Washington (his birthday is Feb. 22), but morphed into a day of recognition for all U.S. presidents when it was moved to the third Monday in February in 1971. Who is your favorite president? Tell us in the comments. Me, I’m a Lincoln fan.
Pickup hockey: URI’s Boss Ice Arena offers a public hockey program available to men and women 14 years of age and older. If you're looking for a fun pickup game or if you're looking to challenge yourself against other competition, the Boss Arena is the place to be. All participants are required to wear full equipment. It takes place Wednesday and Friday too. From noon to 2 p.m., $6 per person.
Winter vacation week: February break can be a challenge. If you have a great winter vacation idea, please share it here.
Vacation head’s up: I’m away (really!) through Sat., Feb. 23. Asst. Regional Editor Patrick Luce will be manning the site in my absence. His email is firstname.lastname@example.org. But if you have something that can wait for my return, please do wait. I will have my phone but will be trying to not respond to work emails!
On Tuesday …
Blood Drive: The bloodmobile will be outside of Starbucks on Main Street this afternoon from 3 to 7 p.m. The R.I. Blood Center lost nearly 600 donations during last week’s blizzard, so donations are extra-appreciated!
On Wednesday …
Fancy Nancy Tea Party: The Friends of the EG Free Library is hosting the Fancy Nancy Tea Party on Wednesday for boys and girls ages 4 to 8. Dress up in your favorite outfit and come have some fun. They'll be serving mini turkey and jelly sandwiches, carrots, tea and apple juice and mini cupcakes and other yummies. There will be crafts and story time. Space is limited – to register call the Children's Room at 884-9510, ext. 4. From 2:30 to 4 p.m.
