Five Things: Revolutionaries, Pirates & More

Your guide for life in East Greenwich today, Aug. 11.

Revolutionary War re-enactment: The 1770 Coventry home of General George Washington's most trusted general will be the site of a Revolutionary War encampment. Revolutionary War re-enactors will recreate an authentic military encampment on the grounds of the historic General Nathanael Greene Homestead. See musket, cannon, and camp-life demonstrations.  This encampment goes from Saturday to Sunday. Please come on and support the Nathanael Greene Homestead's first encampment in the 21st century. Open at 10 a.m. Cost $5. 50 Taft St., Coventry.

Pirates! at Smith’s Castle: Set sail for an adventure at Smith’s Castle in North Kingstown to see PIRATES! Against All Flags. Neal Kirk (aka Captain William Kidd) founder/commander of Free Men Of the Sea, a pirate living-history reenactment group, will display his exhibit of original and reproduction artifacts to depict the reality and myths about the Golden Age of Piracy. PIRATES! Against All Flags focuses on the pirates of the Red Sea trade that were common in New England from about 1690 to 1720. Get a glimpse into the fact and folklore of the pirates of long ago. View a variety of period weapons, an array of pirate flags, period coins, examples of what treasure pirates really sought, pirate books and movie costumes, types of punishments, and other essential pirate paraphernalia. If you love things piratical, you’ll enjoy this exhibit. Admission to the indoor PIRATES! exhibit is $8 adults, $3 children 6-12, and free for children under 6. Rated “Arrrr” for all ages! The exhibit will be available for viewing from noon to 4:00 pm on every Saturday in August.

Transfer Station: I’ve said it before, but this is where it’s at on Saturdays. And it happens to have one of the best views on the Cove (weird but true!). On Crompton Avenue, open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Register to vote in Sept. 11 primary: The Town Clerk’s office may not be open, but it’s not too late to register. Swing by the EG Police station. You can pick up a registration form there, fill it out and leave it with them. They will accept registration forms until 4 p.m. on Sunday. Don’t miss out – we have local and state primaries this year!

Loving the Facebook ‘Likes’! If you haven’t “liked” EG Patch on Facebook yet, you’re missing out. It’s a great way to stay engaged, as well as to make sure post your own events on our page. Here’s the link. And thanks!
