Girls Basketball Defeats W. Warwick, 41-30

Freshman Margaret McCaffery racks up 11 points and 6 assists.

The Avengers wore out the Wizards in league play Tuesday night at EGHS, winning 41-30. Freshman Margaret McCaffery made the difference, with a powerhouse second half and 11 points and 6 assists overall.

"Margaret played fantastic," said team co-captain Karen Lockhart. "She kind of went on fire in the second half. She’s come on big for us. She’s come on big for us a lot this year."

Coach Matt Records agreed: "Margaret McCaffery was unbelieveable tonight. I’m extremely proud of her because she started the game making a few mistakes and she overcame them."

Conditioning and numbers helped Tuesday night too, Records said. "We really wore them out in the second half. We can play 9 or 10 kids, they can’t. In the second half, we continued to play hard and they were a little fatigued."

"We came in expecting a good team," said Lockhart. "I was surprised by the end of the game. What won us the game was our defense."

Co-captain Megan Anderson "was a beast on the boards," according to Records. She had 10 rebounds on the night and 8 points.

Other scorers were junior Lauren Duvall with 10 points, junior Ashley Riveria with 5 points, Karen Lockhart with 4 point ("and they were a big four," Records said) and Julia Pelosi with 3 points.

The Avengers improve to 4-1 in league play, 6-2 overall. They take on Cranston East away on Thursday at 7 p.m.
