Local Fundraiser Sold Out For Kids Of Murdered Johnston Woman
Organizers of a planned dinner in East Greenwich and walk-a-thon held over the weekend in Johnston reported nearly $13,000 raised for the children of Stacie Dorego.
Barely a month after efforts began to help the children of Stacie Dorego, organizers of two events reported this week that they had raised a combined $13,000 for the Dorego Fund.
A buffet and auction scheduled for March 3 at Harbourside Lobstermania sold out of tickets this week, reported Ken Wild, one of the organizers.
Wild wrote in an email that the pre-event ticket sales and donations surpassed $10,000 this week, with a goal of $15,000 raised now within sight.
"No tickets will be sold at the door," Wild wrote. "We are now aggressively selling 50/50 raffle tickets at [East Greenwich eateries] Mozzarella's, Richard's Restaurant and Pub, Felicia's Coffee, and Ritrovo Italian Pub and Grille."
Organizers of the buffet are also continuing to accept donations of auction items and cash donations, Wild added.
Melissa Ferrell, a personal trainer at Anytime Fitness on Atwood Avenue in Johnston and organizer of the "Healing Miles" fundraiser held on Feb. 12, confirmed that the walk-a-thon — held on two of the workout center's treadmills — had raised $2,391 as of midday Tuesday.
Participants logged 100.8 miles on the treadmills during the 12-hour fundraiser, Ferrell noted in an email message, adding that the center will continue to accept donations through Friday.
Anytime Fitness member Linda Bock was the highest fundraiser, collecting $400, and Richard Boehm of the Johnston Fire Department — which has hosted clothing, gift card, and cash donation collections since Jan. 24 — logged the most miles, with 6.77 completed during his stint.
Donald Greenslit is currently in prison awaiting trial on charges that he murdered Dorego in their Pershing Road home on Jan. 22 and left the two youngest children in an upstairs bedroom as he attempted to burn Dorego's remains.
Greenslit is due to appear in Third District Court, Warwick, for a bail and probation violation hearing on Feb. 16.
