Obituary: Lynn J. Mitchell, 43, Cole Teacher

She taught math at Cole Middle School.

 


Lynn J. (Stepka) Mitchell, 43, passed away at home surrounded by her family on Sunday, Dec. 23. She was the wife of Bruce S. Mitchell of Exeter. Born in Attleboro, Mass., she was the daughter of William F. and Doris J. (Roy) Stepka of Johnston.

Besides her husband she is survived by two children, Madeline and Scott Mitchell, stepson Nick Murphy of Exeter; a brother Michael Stepka of Attleboro, Mass., and a grandmother Emily Stepka of Johnston. 

A graduate of URI, Lynn had a Masters degree from Rhode Island College.

She was a math teacher for the Riptide team at Cole Middle School. 

"She was an enormously dedicated teacher and I have no doubt that her kind, gentle manner touched the lives of many Cole students inside and outside the classroom," said Cole Principal Alexis Meyer. "Lynn will be dearly missed by her colleagues at Cole."

Lynn began teaching in East Greenwich in 2005.

Calling hours will be at Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home, 659 East Greenwich Ave., West Warwick, on Wednesday, Dec. 26 from 5 to 7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Kateri Tekakwitha, 84 Exeter Road, Exeter, on Thursday at 10 a.m. Donations may be made to The Mitchell Children's College Education Trust Fund c/o Sovereign Bank, 27 Brown St., North Kingstown, R.I.

You cannot pay teachers, firefighters and police officers too much. And I am not a teacher, firefighter or police officer, but realize how they are the true heroes in our fragile world.
