Pedestrians Struck in Hit-and-Run
A man and a woman are transported to area hospitals, one with potentially serious injuries.
Two pedestrians were struck in a hit-and-run accident on Main Street Tuesday night, one of whom was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital with what appeared to be a serious head injury.
Rescue workers arrived at 162 Main St., in front of the Greenwich Hotel, just before midnight after a 911 call reporting a pedestrian hit by a car. Fire and rescue personnel actually found two victims at the scene — a 40-year-old woman with a lower leg injury, and a 49-year-old man, who was unconscious and looked to have a serious head injury, according to EG Fire Chief Peter Henrikson.
The car that hit the two had fled the scene, Henrikson said.
The man was taken to Rhode Island Hospital and the woman was transported to Kent County Hospital. Officials are not releasing the victims' names at this time. There is not yet any information on an arrest. Stay with East Greenwich Patch for more information as it comes available.

What a tragedy. The lighting on Main Street is not sufficient. The lanterns are charming and all, but I can rarely see people waiting at crosswalks. It is just too dark on Main Street at night. Hopefully because of what happened, this will change. It is about safety.

I think the fact that EGPD don not enforce stopping for pedestrians in the crosswalk is another major issue.

Some pedestrians do not take reasonable precautions and step out in front of parked cars. Very difficult to see them especially if raining. They think that because they are in a crosswalk that they are safe. Also people wearing dark clothes walking in areas with no sidewalks is very bad also.

No matter what the reason, if you hit someone, you stop!

I agree with all of the above comments especially the 1 from Don about the Main Street lighting. Betsy

ok the women mentioned is my cousin and emotionally she's not doing well and in a lot of pain, how can anyone even think to blame her for crossing in a marked crosswalk, where there's signs everywhere to yield for pedestrians, and the speed limit is what 25???? a person should be able to cross the street an if someone hits them ..... my god stop!!!!!!!!!
