Police Arrest EG Man For Selling Marijuana On Academy Field

Two others also arrested – including a 14-year-old.

Police arrested Edward Whiteley, 20, of Main Street, for possessing marijuana with intent to deliver; Jonathan Bell, 21, of Country Court, for marijuana possession; and a 14-year-old EG boy for possessing prescription drugs on Tuesday, Aug. 28, after a tip from an EG fire fighter.

The arrests were made at 2:17 p.m. at the bleachers on Academy Field. Whiteley's charge of intent to deliver is a felony offense.

After receiving the tip, police talked to a man near Swift Community Center who also said he thought a drug deal was going to take place in the area soon. Police saw Whiteley, who was familiar to them, and another man walking across Academy Field toward the bleachers. Two other males were standing near second base on the ballfield there.

Police intervened at that point and while talking to the four participants, saw Whiteley toss a small baggie under the bleachers. The baggie contained what later proved to be marijuana.

Whiteley, Bell, and the juvenile were arrested at that point and taken to the station for processing. At the station, Whiteley asked police to go to his apartment and get bail money from his girlfriend. When the girlfriend answered the door, police detected a strong smell of fresh marijuana. They entered the apartment and saw marijuana paraphernalia out in the open.

At that point, one officer remained at the apartment while detectives returned to the station to get a search warrant. Once obtained, the detectives returned to the apartment, where they seized 93.3 grams of marijuana in a large plastic bag; nine brown bags packaged for sale (approximately 12.5 grams total); 22 grams of loose marijuana in a jar; 14 white bags (approximately 22 grams total); a scale; and $434 in cash.

Both Whiteley and Bell have been arraigned in District Court. The juvenile has been referred to family court.

Thank you EGPD. Many of us in the neighborhood have been frustrated by the partying that has been taking place in and around Academy field since the police department moved. Hope that these arrests are a sign that we will see an increased police presence at Academy field, particularly after dark.
