Police Arrest Suspects In Both Monday Break In, Tuesday Robbery

An arrest warrant for a second suspect in the Frenchtown break has been issued.

Police have made arrests in two incidents that took place this week — a break in to an occupied house on Frenchtown Road Monday afternoon and an armed robbery at Sunnybrook Farms Tuesday night.

Police arrested Samuel T. Lemont, 18, of Bayberry Lane, for the armed robbery of the Main Street convenience store. The robbery took place Tuesday evening at 9:33 p.m. Lemont allegedly held up the lone employee, departing with an unknown amount of money.

The weapon — a semi-automatic handgun — was recovered, according to police. Lemont was arraigned Thursday in Kent County District Court on one count of first degree robbery. If convicted, he would face 10 years to life in prison.

East Greenwich police also arrested Trisha M. Newman, 24, of Summer Street in Central Falls, in connection with a break in at an occupied house on Frenchtown Road Monday afternoon around 4:30 p.m. In that incident, a young girl (police said only that she was below age 15) was in the house at the time of the break. The girl barricaded herself upstairs and called 911, keeping in phone contact with police throughout the event.

Newman was arraigned in Kent County District Court Thursday on one count of conspiracy to commit a breaking and entering. She was released on $10,000 personal recognizance.

EG Police Chief Tom Coyle said he was very pleased with the arrests. "I'm very proud. They worked around the clock," he said, referring to the officers involved in the two cases — Det. David Black; Det. Sergeant Jon Chirnside; Det. Lieutenant Jeremy Fague, and Det. Patrick Trainor.

An arrest warrant has been issued for her alleged accomplice, Bruce McKenzie, 23, of Cranston. Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is asked to call EG police at 401-884-2244.

This is what I don't understand about people from EG. It seems as though nothing originates here, no one here EVER does anything wrong. This town is PERFECT. The girl who was arrested grew up in East Greenwich, I went to school with her. She was a girl scout to boot. Sometimes its not the area in which a person is from or the area they were brought up in. Sometimes it is just the kid themselves, or a lack of parenting. Who knows. We cannot be blind to the fact that this town is just like any other. It "breeds" some people who have lost their way. It also comes out with some people that this country owes a debt and are contributing members to society. Why don't we all just worry about being all that WE can be and focus on bettering ourselves rather than saying "Of COURSE this girl was from Central Falls! Anyone could have guessed that!" Anyone could have guessed that she was black too, but they all would have been wrong.

I don't suppose there's any connection to crime in town and the 4-5 bars all within a mile of one another.

what do the bars have to do with this? is it the bars, drugs, central falls...??? if we're looking for patterns of colocation, maybe it's the 4-5 Italian restaurants all within a mile of one another that contributed to these crimes...

EG Lurker commented on Police Arrest Suspects In Both Monday Break In, Tuesday Robbery, which you are following.
"what do the bars have to do with this? is it the bars, drugs, central falls...??? if we're looking for patterns of colocation, maybe it's the 4-5 Italian restaurants all within a mile of one another that contributed to these crimes..."

Well to answer your question. As a long time resident and fisherman down the waterfront, I believe it is the bars that are a cause for a majority of the crime in town. Everything from public lewdness to robberies and break ins. The town's majority of crime is vandalism, break ins, underage drinking, drugs, and lewd acts in public. I believe if EG becomes a dry town, we won't have people going to the bars getting smashed breaking into cars, vandalising property or having sex in and amoungst our homes, nor would these out of towners cause as much trouble as they do. Admit it, you need to be pretty dumb or on something to rob a store you just called from, then get out of a cab not a football field away infront of trafalga apartments. Before the sloberslide (harbor side) was put in it was greatly feared the wrong sort of people would be drawn here. In 22 years sunnybrook has never been robbed. Perhaps the bars are finally bringing in the wrong crowd.

Dry town? What is this, Georgia???

While we're at it, Exodus, let's ban dancing and rock and roll. I've got John Lithgow on the speed dial...

That's nice that you got him on speed dial. The harbor side and table 49 are within 100 yards of a residents. There is a by law on the towns books that isn't really enforced. The by law states that there is to be no disruption to any residence within 100 yards. The exception to that law is emergency vehicles. And yes a dry town. Revoke the liquor licences of the bars. Then these idiots from surrounding towns will have to go else where. I'm sorry to say EG Lurker, but I see crime all the time down the water front. It's so bad I stopped fishing the water front. Last year I was pushed off the dock while fishing by 3 guys who just came out of the harbor side. That's not a first, not sure how long you been in town, but there was a few kids who were drowned by drunks comming from the bar. In the last 5 years there's been numberous rapes. About 15 years ago they were finding bodies of rape victims in the dumpsters down there. It's all been connected to the bars. There is even a long held believe by many long term residences that the bars have ties to the mafia. When the vote happened everyone in town voted against the bars being put in. They were granted anyway. Get rid of the liquor get rid of the crime. I'm not say all liquor should be banned. Thorpse, the savory grape, greenwich liquors are fine. It's the bars that aren't.

Mafia? Bodies in dumpsters? Numerous rapes? Where do we live, the South Bronx??

Exodus, to assume that revoking the liquor licenses of bars will cause all of the crime in town to disappear is short sighted. Do you believe that all of the restaurants in town should get their licenses revoked as well? That would be detrimental to EG. Our town is a destination for fine dining, and liquor is part of that. I enjoy my cocktails, it does not mean that I am going to out and rape, murder & pillage.

Also, why would it be ok for the liquor stores to remain open? If you want EG to be a dry town, then everything is dry, not just restaurants and bars. Thorpes will sell liquor to anybody - much cheaper than you will get in a bar - and with no bartender to cut you off.

Prohibition would only force liquor underground. It is not a solution.

The entire town voted against the harbor side, yet it was put in anyway. Many long time eg residents believe the mafia made that happen. Yes bodies in dumpsters. There was a man long time ago who came from cranston just to pray on young women, after raping them, he was throwing their bodies into the dumpsters. Rapes yes, drunk women walking from a bar rape happens sorry but it does happen.

Not all crime will cease, but a majority of it will. The dui's, the sex in public (which is extremely common), the assaults, plus the streets would be nicer. Last summer the harbor side stunk up the whole waterfront, all you could smell was booze and vomit over the smell of the waste processing plant.

Fine dining is one thing, people go out have a glass of wine and have a good time. The bars are not anything remotely close to that. The resturaunts are fine, nothing wrong with them, it's the bars. I enjoy a few drinks myself. I understand not everyone is doing it. It's these idiots from out of town. I had a guy come out of the harbor side to his truck with conneticut plates, accuse me of raising the water level so he'd get his shoes wet and if I didn't lower the water level he was going to shoot me! This was at 9 at night. Not only was he drunk that he fell over, but he believed I sent the wind to do it.

The liquor stores are fine cause you go home to drink. Your not puking in the streets and going to a place you can be seen to get it on.

I also do have a solution. Close the bars, eg then negotiates with north kingstown to build a entertainment center over on the quonsett base. Where there isn't people having to live there, they can get as loud as they want, as drunk as they want an they can go park over there and get it on without the possibility of kids watching them do it. Could even build a strip mall and split the profits 50/50. Then you can go further away from eg homes and cause hell like the drunks do from the bars. The best part, I can take my son fishing again...without him at 6 years old see a drunk dude who came from harbor side at 9 and his girlfriend he just met get out naked at the town dock and go at it on the hood of the car infront of us...that's what eg hotel is for on main street.

See the issue?
