Most break-ins take place during the daytime hours when people have gone off to work. There are a few things people can do to minimize their chance of being targeted. Burglars are looking for 3 things: Cash, jewelry and electronics. Anything else they get while in your home is just a bonus.
If you have a garage, park your car in it - consistently. Make sure any windows are covered. This way it will be hard to tell if you are home or not. Keep the door from the garage to the house locked! Don't leave your garage open so people can see what's inside. If you have a boat, jet-skis or any similar stuff, keep them covered. Ninety percent of break-ins are by someone you know, or someone who is nearby and knows what's going on at your home.
Don't advertise what you have. If you get a new computer, TV or whatever, don't put the box out with your weekly trash pick-up (the box should be recycled, anyway!) Break it up, shove it in a recycling bin to keep prying eyes from seeing.
If you have an alarm system, USE IT! Ask your security company for a yard sign and window stickers. These are a big deterrent and most burglars will look elsewhere.

Burglars are also also looking for DRUGS and LIQUOR. The liquor, jewelry & electronics are very often sought as a means to obtain drug money.
