Post Rain Delay, Outdoor Movie Plays To Smaller Crowd Sunday Night
Organizers say trying for a Friday night, with a Saturday rain date, may be a better way to go.
Darn that Saturday rainstorm! Everything had been lining up so nicely for the third annual "Movie Under the Stars" on Academy Field. People were sending out emails and planning picnics and children were getting excited to be able to stay up late and watch a movie outside.
But Saturday morning dawned with a discouraging weather report: heavy rains were due in the afternoon and evening. The movie – "Jumanji" – had to be postponed to Sunday night, the rain date.
And, indeed, people came out for the showning Sunday night, but not a lot of people. It was a school night after all.
The event was presented by the Main Street Association, the nonprofit group that used to be the Downtown Planning Initiative. Bil Herron and Tracy Truesdell were the two members who did most of the heavy lifting for the event. Herron said Monday while the numbers were lower than hoped for (EG Patch estimates 75 people), it was a "great night."
Truesdell said Sunday they would try to get the equipment for a Friday-Saturday next year, so if there is a rain delay, the second night wouldn't be a school night. She also wondered if moving the event to Eldredge would prove more inviting.
