Robbery Suspect Arrested This Morning In Cumberland Farms Parking Lot

East Greenwich Police apprehended this morning at the Cumberland Farms on South County Trail a man who is suspected of robbing and threatening to kill a woman in the Dave’s Marketplace parking lot on Sunday, according to East Greenwich Police.

Michael J. Brooks, 48, of Narragansett, was taken into custody without incident this morning at approximately 9:25. Officer Bryan McManus saw the suspect’s vehicle in the Cumberland Farms parking lot and then saw the man walking out of the convenience store, police said.

Police suspected Brooks was in the area because similar crimes to the one that happened on Sunday  occurred this morning in the Dave’s Marketplace parking lot on Post Road in North Kingstown and at the Walmart on Ten Road Road in North Kingstown, according to East Greenwich Police.

He was arrested at the Cumberland Farms in East Greenwich approximately ten minutes after the incident at Walmart was reported to police, according to local police.

“We had officers saturating the area,” said East Greenwich Police Chief Thomas Coyle. “While Officer McManus was searching the area, he spotted the suspect vehicle.”

Within seconds of arresting Brooks, McManus was assisted by other East Greenwich police officers, state troopers and Narragansett police officers.

Brooks is being held at the East Greenwich Police Station and could be transported to the Adult Corrections Institute in Cranston later today.

“Because of his violent behavior,” said East Greenwich Police Chief Thomas Coyle, “he is handcuffed and leg irons were used.”

Brooks is being accused of using a screwdriver to assault and rob a 68-year-old woman in the Dave’s Marketplace parking lot on Sunday at about 4 p.m. [Click HERE to read the original story] According to East Greenwich Police, he approached the woman as she was loading groceries into her car, put a screwdriver against her and told her that he would kill her if she didn’t give him her purse.

He is also believed to have committed similar crimes on Sunday at the Stop and Shops in both Narragansett and North Kingstown. Including the two incidents that were reported this morning, he is thought to have committed five such crimes in less than 48 hours.

Chief Coyle said he was very pleased that the dangerous suspect was off the streets, as well as with the diligent work of his officers.

“I’m very pleased with the performance of all my officers on the day shift to apprehend such a violent offender,” he said. “It makes me proud as the chief of police to know we have such professionalism and integrity in serving the people of East Greenwich.”
