The Week In Sports
The spring sport teams are wrapping up their regular seasons strong and getting ready for the playoffs.
Baseball: Due to rain the boys baseball team played their first game of the week on Friday at home against the Coventry Oakers. The Oakers spoiled the Avengers senior day, upsetting them by a score of 8-2. But the Avengers bounced back the next morning as they blew past Middletown winning 9-1 with sophomore sensation David Hopkins pitching a complete game. The Avengers have a pivotal game this Monday at home versus divisional rival North Kingstown to finish off their regular season schedule.
Fastpitch Softball: The softball team also went through rain postponements last week so they only got to compete in one game on Friday against Cranston East. The game was even until the bottom of the third inning when Lauren Duvall crushed a three-run homer out of the park. The Avengers ended up winning easily 8-1 while Molly Anderson earned another win on the mound while only allowing one hit. The softball team has an impressive record with 12 wins and only 2 losses on the season.
Boys Lacrosse: The boys lacrosse team capped off their regular-season play with a dominant performance over Mount Hope High School. The Avengers cruised to a 15-4 victory; captain Lucas Stralka had 5 goals and an assist and goalie Dante Granatiero had 15 saves on the day. With that win, the Avengers finished 8-7 in Division 2 South and begin playoffs on Thursday.
Girls Lacrosse: The girls lax team had a very productive week with victories over Bay View and South Kingstown. Their game on Tuesday against Bay View went down to the wire when Kiley Powers scored the game-winning goal with just three seconds remaining. The final score was 16-15 and Kiley Powers led the Avengers in scoring with eight goals. EG's senior night game against SK wasn't nearly as close as they beat the SK Rebels 21-14 with seven different Avengers contributing in the scoring. The girls lacrosse team finished off their regular season record with 10 wins and 3 losses.
Golf: On Monday the East Greenwich golfers had a very good day at Warwick Country Club with wins over previously undefeated Hendricken and Pilgrim. Senior captain Brad Lockhart shot the best score out of all three teams with an impressive 36, and the other three Avenger golfers (Chris Gallogly, Alex Krauss, Jason Peduto) tied for second with a score of 42.
Tennis: The boys tennis team only played in one match against Portsmouth last Wednesday and continued their dominance with a 7-0 sweep over the Patriots. All of their singles and doubles players earned the win in order to continue their undefeated season at 14-0. The boys tennis team wraps up their regular season matches this week against Portsmouth and Prout in hopes of finishing the season undefeated.
Volleyball: The boys volleyball team continued their winning streak early in the week with a dominant performance over Tollgate while winning the fourth set 25-9. Eli Brown had 36 assists on the night and Dan Shawver added 18 kills. The team then traveled to first-place team Cranston West and put up a great fight, losing 25-23, 25-23, and 30-28. The volleyball team finishes off their regular season at home on Senior Night this Monday at 6PM against Exeter/West Greenwich before they begin playoffs next week.
Boys Track and Field: The track team competed in the Class C meet on Saturday and finished second overall. The team also had many good individual performances including Dillon Danforth winning the 200, Dylan Manning getting second place in the 400, Chris Millman winning the 800 and coming in second in the 1500, Scott Kulm earning second in the 3000, and Ben Fazio got third place in the 800.
