About this column:

You're time-pressed enough, so we're happy to do the research and find the best things to do and places to go, both locally and within reasonable striking distance. Look for the kids’ planner each Wednesday, and help us build the planner with your own suggestions and tips — just add them to the comment box. Even if you disagree with our picks, let us know. We want to hear from you!
1. Indie Kids Music: The Laurie Berkner Band comes to the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Providence this Saturday, March 26, at 11am. Berkner, who has been called the queen of children’s music, writes and performs music that appeals to children and their parents – making her a family favorite. 2. Mad, Bad Basketball: The legendary Harlem Globetrotters are back, this time on their “4 Times the Fun” tour. This is a special kind of March madness – the 4-point kind. The players and the moves cannot be beat … or easily replicated. But chances are, your young ones will try! The fun begins at 7:…
Children’s Museum for Free: Kids love the Providence Children’s Museum and parents love free admission, so Friday, March 18, is a win-win. From 5 to 8 p.m., admission to the museum is free. Between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m., in addition to all the regular activities, kids can construct hoop gliders. Rainbow Cupcakes: You may not find a pot of gold under these cupcakes, but you will have a terrific activity to do with the kids and a fun St. Patrick’s Day dessert. You’ll need a white cake mix, food colorings, baking cups and whipped cream or frosting. Prepare the cake mix and pour equal parts of …
1. A Walk in the Park: Spring is almost (!) here. Take a walk over at Goddard Memorial State Park to see what may be popping up. Tell the kids to count how many new green shoots they can find but be sure to remind them not to pull them up! There are several walks to choose from but a favorite is to park at the far end of the beach parking lot and head into the woods. If you follow the coastline, you’ll end up at a beach with a beautiful view of Greenwich Bay. 2. International Idol at EGHS: American Idol’s got nothing on this: head over to the high school Thursday evening for fun in several …
1. Colorful Fun:  Have a colorful ice cube scavenger hunt in your own backyard.  Freeze some food colored ice cubes (of one color or many) and hide them in your yard.  Send the kids out to find them!  (If you are worried about "colored gloves" then insist that the cubes are picked up with salad tongs!) 2. Bakin' Browines:  A cheap brownie mix ranges from under a dollar to $1.69 at Stop & Shop and Dave's Marketplace and is a great treat to make and eat.  Encouraging kids to bake with you or on their own is a great way to develop their reading comprehension skills as well as being a yummy way …
Family fun doesn't have to be expensive and the in-depth bonding that results from the time spent together is wonderful.  A quote that comes to mind when I think about being with my own three kids?  "Your children need your presence more than your presents!"   1. Providence Film Festival:  February 17-22 are dates to remember.  Elinor's Secret, a lovely animated feature, will debut.  And the festival is not just about movie watching, there will  also be childrens' workshops available.    Call 861-4445 for more information.   2. Clayground:  Located in the Benny's plaza in East Greenwich, …
