EGHS Senior Kyle Van Fechtmann offers up weekly perspective on Avenger sports.
Baseball: Due to rain the boys baseball team played their first game of the week on Friday at home against the Coventry Oakers. The Oakers spoiled the Avengers senior day, upsetting them by a score of 8-2. But the Avengers bounced back the next morning as they blew past Middletown winning 9-1 with sophomore sensation David Hopkins pitching a complete game. The Avengers have a pivotal game this Monday at home versus divisional rival North Kingstown to finish off their regular season schedule. Fastpitch Softball: The softball team also went through rain postponements last week so they only got …
Baseball: The Avenger baseball team started off the week strong once again with a shutout victory over Chariho as Chris Pogue pitched a complete game shutout and David Hopkins chipped in with a triple and scored run to lead the Avs to a 2-0 win. The team then traveled to Portsmouth on Wednesday and was winning the game 4-0 until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Portsmouth Patriots knocked in 7 runs and then 3 more runs in the sixth inning to end up winning 10-4. The Avengers bounced back against divisional rival South Kingstown on Thursday in their third road game of the week. John …
Baseball: On Monday the baseball squad won 2-0 versus Warwick Vets while Ryan Gavin earned his first varsity win in shutout fashion. On Thursday they crushed Tiverton 12-2 on Tiverton's home field. David Hopkins pitched a complete game win and John Kalajian and Jeremy Streich both contributed with two hits and three RBIs. On Friday the Avengers faced off against their division rival, South Kingstown and beat them 9-3. John Kalajian and Ryan Pieroni pitched for a combined no hitter and Dan Caron hit a three-run homer to open up the game in the third inning. With their three victories last week…
Thanks to April vacation the Avenger student athletes did not have to worry about school work last week but still were focused on their spring sports. Every spring sport program was busy over break. The varsity baseball team spent the majority of the vacation practicing hard but also played in three league matchups against Narragansett, North Kingstown and Middletown. They started off strong on Monday against Narragansett with a 15-3  win over the Mariners. The next day the Avengers battled divisional rival, the NK Skippers, but lost that one on a heartbreaking walk-off grand slam by Jared …
Hats off to each of the Avenger fall sport programs for having tremendous seasons. The fall was filled with countless victories that the Avengers will never forget. Every fall sport squad had a winning season and had at least two playoff wins, besides only a couple of teams. The Avengers definitely showcased their skills daily during the fall.Male Rising Star of the Fall: Andrew MinerIt is a rarity for a freshman to start on their varsity football team. It is also virtually unheard of for a freshman to start at the quarterback position, but Andrew Miner overcame those odds by becoming the …
The East Greenwich High School Avengers had amazing fall seasons but some could not win when it counted most. Five teams played for a State Championship, but only one team could cap the season off with a title trophy, the field hockey team. Both varsity soccer teams went into last weekend hoping for a state championship trophy but their seasons did not end how they imagined it. The boys varsity soccer team went into their state championship game undefeated, looking to repeat as state champions. I hate to bring back awful memories for all you New England fans out there, but the boys soccer …
Turns out both Avenger soccer teams will be playing for a state championship this weekend as the girls team captured a semifinal victory over South Kingstown under the Carcieri field lights. The lady Avengers battled to a 3-0 shutout over the Rebels in order to clinch their spot in the Division-One state championship. The girls will play against their biggest rival, LaSalle Academy Sunday at 1 at Rhode Island College. Their only loss of the season this year was against LaSalle, but the Avengers have the momentum they need to win a state title after shutting out their playoff opponents this …
The majority of the Avenger fall sport teams are either still alive now playing in the playoffs, or made it as far as they could. Although the cross country season is not finished yet, the girls team captured the class championship this past weekend and will take that momentum into the state championships this weekend. The boys cross country team will also look to enhance their achievements on the season by performing well this weekend at states at Ponagansett. The girls tennis team made it as far as they could have but unfortunately lost in the state championship to Smithfield last weekend. …
The Avenger football team has won two straight without senior leader Jonny Lamendola, who injured his shoulder. But sophomore Alex Cleary followed his footsteps, so to speak, returning the first kickoff of the night last week for a touchdown "Lamendola style." Senior captain Max Palmer scored his second consecutive game-winning touchdown while running all over the NK Skippers on their home turf. Can the Avs treat their fans to a Homecoming victory tonight against Tiverton to make it three in a row? What to Watch For: The Day Game Streak The Avengers are undefeated on the new turf field during…
