Welcome back, Patch Blogger!
Okay, so you've got out-of-town visitors and you want to take them somewhere special. The only catch is that you don't have much time. Where to go? Try the Gilbert Stuart Birthplace in North Kingstown. Gilbert Stuart painted perhaps the most famous portrait of George Washington in existence. Not only that, but it's the most frequently seen picture of Washington - it's his portrait of our first president that appears on the one-dollar bill. He was born at this exquisitely beautiful homestead that features not just the house he was born in, but an 18th century gristmill and a snuff mill. Stuart…

The Little Kitchen Shop, which opened at 176 Main St. this spring, has already won a coveted Rhode Island Monthly "Best of RI" award. Even though the shop has just opened, it has the feel of an East Greenwich establishment. The focus of the inventory is to supply patrons with everything they need to serve and entertain at home. The shop is loaded with an eclectic array of reasonably-priced kitchen “doodads” that you simply cannot do without. However, gifts and unique products are also part of the mix. A visitor to town can pick up gifts and souvenirs with Rhode Island connections, including …
At the ripe old age of 40-something, I am running out of “firsts” in my life. These days my “firsts” are reserved for my three children — ages 5, 7 and 9. However, when I was presented with an offer of a free massage, I couldn't refuse! I’ve never had a massage. Those who know me wouldn't be surprised.  I rarely sit still; some would call my hyperactive. I'm also very cheap; I like to call it frugality. So, faced with the prospect of free massage, combined with the fact that it would be a work assignment, I couldn't say no, or could I?  Ironically, I didn’t want to say yes. A massage never …
Let’s face it: We in East Greenwich are pretty lucky when it comes to claiming a spot in our nation’s history. After all, we are the birthplace to the US Navy — or at least one of those who lay claim to being such. In addition, there is a story about how Revolutionary War hero Layfayette himself disembarked from his ship in Greenwich Cove and made his way up King Street to General Varnum’s house on Peirce Street. Then, there’s Varnum himself, a pivotal - if largely forgotten - figure in the Revolutionary War.East Greenwich was founded in 1677 and is the eighth-oldest town in the state. …
The combination of horse trails and water views is tough to beat. At C and L Stables in Goddard Park, we in East Greenwich get both of those. C and L offers guided public trail horseback rides, pony rides, riding lessons and various summer camps for children. Goddard Park has 18 miles of scenic trails overlooking East Greenwich Cove and Bay, and C and L also offers beach bayside rides. C and L is holding a day camp for children ages 7 and up. The camp teaches kids proper horsemanship on topics such as how to take care of a horse and barn management. Campers will ride their horses once or …
Carrs Pond lies just beyond the town's formal border, but tell that to the generations of young people who have used the pond as their secret getaway. Or to all those who live on Carrs Pond Road and nearby streets who walk their dogs there or stroll along the pond. The fact is Carrs Pond is part of the East Greenwich psyche, even if its technically in West Greenwich. That's because for many EG young people, taking a dip in Carrs Pond is a rite of passage. Yet there's something that happens when those same people become adults: Memories of the pond seem to recede. That may be because swimming …
