The new Cole Middle School project began and the High School improvement project was completed. The once-acrimonious high school fields project finally came on line. The school custodians were outsourced before a judicially-imposed moderator implored the School Committee to reverse its decision. News comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Sometimes it's postitive, such as when the new turf field finally opened at the high school. Sometimes it's tragic, such as when a 19-year-old former high school student overdosed on heroin. Still other times, it involves overcoming tragedy, such as the March flood and the Trafalgar fire. And sometimes it's hard to tell if the final story is good, bad or indifferent, as is the case with the controversial decision to outsource the school custodians. Pictures are like children. You can't wait to see them come out, they are beautiful when they do, and you can't play favorites with any one of them. That said, we actually don't have a 10 Best Pictures of 2010. Instead, we went through the archives and picked out some of our favorite images of the year.
For a small town, we sure have a lot going on. East Greenwich offers events to mark almost every major holiday, world-class fine arts presentations, kids, pets and cars on parade, and fundraisers galore. 2010 seemed a tough year for the East Greenwich economy, with two of its better-known businesses, Bostitch and Jigger's, either closing or announcing an impending closing. However, there was much growth that occured in the local economy, too, including a deal between the Town and New England Tech, and several new businesses in town. Deciding which stories merited Top-10 status was a combination of the obvious (any state championship, for instance) and the subtle (events that happened off the field of play, such as coaching legend Lou Lepry's induction into the Interscholastic Hall of Fame). Naturally, there were big stories this past year that readers will not find on this list, in particular the spectacular teams that made it just one win shy of a championship.
