DESCRIPTION:The Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation invites Ne
w England motorcyclists to get their motors running and head out on the
highway for the Highway to Hope Motorcycle Run. Bikers from all over the
region will hit the road\, between Twin River Casino in Lincoln and Oce
 an State Harley-Davidson in Exeter\, on Saturday\, August 11 at 3:15 p.m
.\nOne breast cancer survivor who will be front and center at the event\
, though not on a bike this year\, is Maribeth Moorehead. A Warwick nati
ve\, Moorehead and her husband\, Barry\, are working closely with the Gl
oria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation and Ocean State Harley-Davi
dson owner Amy Bishop to ensure the event&rsquo\;s success.&nbsp\;&nbsp\
;&nbsp\;\n&ldquo\;The survivors all get to ride on the backs of the bike
 s\,&rdquo\; said Maribeth Moorehead. &ldquo\;Last year\, I was Barry&rsq
uo\;s passenger but this year\, I&rsquo\;m giving my seat up to another
survivor.&rdquo\;\nMoorehead\, who hopes to get her own motorcycle soon\
, is still recovering from her last operation and 50 weeks of chemothera
 py.\n&ldquo\;So I&rsquo\;ll be helping with registration\,&rdquo\; she s
aid\, &ldquo\; and helping get the girls on the bikes.&rdquo\;\nThen Moo
rehead and the other organizers will head from Lincoln to Exeter to join
their friends and families at the after party.\nMaribeth and Barry Moor
ehead met on a blind date and have been married for over 30 years. They
have two daughters: Bethany\, 24\, and Allison\, 29. Allison is getting
married this month.&nbsp\;\n&ldquo\;When Maribeth was diagnosed\,&rdquo\
; Barry Moorehead remembered\, &ldquo\;it was very hard for us.&rdquo\;\
nThe Mooreheads&rsquo\; association with the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer
Resource Foundation began in 2010 when Maribeth started volunteering on
the Hope Bus\, a 38-foot pink recreational vehicle that serves as the Fo
 undation&rsquo\;s mobile resource unit.\n&ldquo\;There aren&rsquo\;t too
many like it\,&rdquo\; Barry laughed. &ldquo\;We&rsquo\;ve met so many
wonderful people through the Gloria Gemma Foundation. Survivors feel wel
come and like they belong on that bus."\nWhen the 2011 Hope Bus schedule
started to get busy and another driver was needed\, Barry Moorehead vol
 unteered. &ldquo\;I offered. I just said\, &lsquo\;If you need someone\,
  I can help out\,&rsquo\;&rdquo\; he said. &ldquo\;Last year\, I only dr
ove it two or three times. This year\, I&rsquo\;m on there once a week p
retty much.&rdquo\;\nBarry Moorehead\, who had a pink ribbon tattooed on
his forearm to honor his wife&rsquo\;s struggle\, and now proudly drive
s an oversized pink vehicle\, chuckled at his new color scheme\, a sligh
t departure from biker black.\n&ldquo\;If you had told me five years ago
  that I&rsquo\;d be wearing a pink t-shirt every once in a while\,&rdquo
 \; he laughed\, paused and continued soberly\, &ldquo\;You know\, people
who survive breast cancer have gone through hell but some people don&rs
quo\;t make it and that&rsquo\;s why we do what we do.&rdquo\;\nEvents l
ike Highway to Hope are designed to raise awareness in order to increase
early detection\, which is the key to decreasing mortality. It&rsquo\;s
not hard to raise awareness when an event has\, as Barry Moorehead put
it\, &ldquo\;bikes as far as the eye can see.&rdquo\;\nMoorehead said th
at after many individuals go through treatment\, they want to go for a r
ide on a motorcycle.&nbsp\;&nbsp\;\n&ldquo\;When we do large bike runs l
ike this\, it&rsquo\;s empowering. The earth shakes\,&rdquo\; he added.
 &ldquo\;It&rsquo\;s crazy. It&rsquo\;s great.&rdquo\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp
\;\nRegistration will take place at Twin River Casino in Lincoln\, R.I.
from 1:30 until 3:00 p.m. Tickets are $20 per person and each participan
t will receive a collectible souvenir t-shirt. The ride\, from Twin Rive
 r Casino to Ocean State Harley-Davidson in Exeter\, begins at 3:15 p.m.\
 nFree post-ride festivities will take place from 5:00 until 10:00 p.m. a
t Ocean State Harley-Davidson\, 435 Nooseneck Hill Road in Exeter. This
 &ldquo\;Swingin&rsquo\; Saturday&rdquo\; after-party will include food\,
dancing\, live music\, and a movie on the big outdoor screen.&nbsp\;&nb
sp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;\nProceeds from the Highway to Hope Motorcycle
Run will be donated to the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundatio
n and Rhode Island Pink Heals. This event is co-sponsored by Blue Knight
