Fall Theater Classes at EG Parks & Rec

Valerie Remillard Myette, Creative Director of Experiments In Theater in East Greenwich, RI is offering two youth musical theater classes beginning in October in association with the Department of East Greenwich Parks and Recreation.  For registration details, visit the Parks & Rec website at http://www.eastgreenwichri.com/TownServices/ParksRecreation/tabid/189/Default.aspx or call the office at 401-886-8626.  Registration is limited and East Greenwich residents will receive priority enrollment.

For pre-school aged children, Myette offers “Broadway Babies” on Tuesday mornings beginning October 29 through December 3 from 9:15-10:15 AM at the EG Parks & Rec. Office at 1127 Frenchtown Road. In this class for children ages 4-6, students will learn vocal selections from “The Lion King,” rehearse staging the songs and learn to vocalize properly.  Myette feels strongly that even at an early age, children can benefit from vocal awareness.

“Vocal awareness is different from vocal training.  A professional singer works very hard on their technique and breath.  There are exercises and warmups that an adult singer will do that a young child isn’t even physically capable of doing yet.  In my classes, I start by calling awareness to the importance of the breath and by practicing developmentally appropriate warm ups. I teach that singing, like any sport, requires you to pay attention to your body and to start to have some control.  Control starts with awareness.”

Musical children ages 7-10 can take part in “Songs and Mashups” on Wednesdays beginning October 30-December 11 from 3:45-5:15 PM also at the EG Parks & Rec. office on Frenchtown Road.  This is a new class for Myette who is has a lot of experience directing, singing and recording with choirs and a cappella groups.  Students in “Songs and Mashups” will learn and perform a medley (AKA “mash up”) of select songs from the hit television series, “Glee.”  Proper singing, including breath support, vocalization and placement will be introduced and practiced.

All related materials are included with the registration fee and both classes offer a final showcase that family and friends are welcome to attend.
