Slavery at Smith's Castle

At its monthly meeting on Monday, January 20th, Neil Dunay will speak at the East Greenwich Historic Preservation Society on slavery at Cocumsussoc (Smith's Castle).

From the late 17th to early 19th century, Smith's Castle was a plantation that covered thousands of acres in North Kingstown.  It depended on slave labor to produce and ship goods abroad and to support the owners' domestic requirements. Neil Dunay, who has studied period maps and other source materials about Cocumsussoc, will tell about the slaves at this plantation and insights about the Smith/Updike families roles in the institution of slavery.

The meeting begins at 6:30 with a pot luck supper at the old Jail, 110 King Street, East Greenwich.  Neil's program begins at 7:30.
