YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by 60%

PROVIDENCE - The YMCA of Greater Providence is offering the YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program for those who are at risk for type 2 diabetes.  The program is geared for adults who have been told by a physician that they are pre-diabetic or are at a high risk for development of type 2 diabetes.

The YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program is part of the landmark Diabetes Prevention Program funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control which showed that by eating healthier, increasing physical activity and losing a small amount of weight a person with pre-diabetes can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.

The program takes place over a twelve month period. During phase one participants meet for 16 weekly sessions in a classroom setting led by a lifestyle coach where they learn the importance of eating healthy, and tools to reduce body mass index and increase physical activity per week.  Phase two consists of eight monthly classes to help participate to continue to make sensible changes in lifestyle.
