Chilly Weather, But Turkey Trotters Carry On

More than 800 people signed up to take part in the third-annual downtown EG Turkey Trot – cold temps be hanged!

Cold weather? We're made of stronger stuff here in New England. Or, at least, the hundreds were who braved 25 degree weather Saturday morning to take part in the Main Street Association's 3rd annual Turkey Trot.

The winner of the 5K was Ben Fazio, 18, with a time of 16:14. In second place was Chris Millman, 19, with 16:41. Third place went to David Holgate, 27, with a time of 17:33. Fazio and Millman are recent EGHS grads, as was the fourth-place finisher, Scott Kulm (17:44). All four top finishers were from East Greenwich.

The top female finisher was Kate Bruck, 38, of East Greenwich, who finished with a time of 19:03, ninth overall. Leigha Anderson, 21, was the second woman finisher (19:33), and third was Katie Desrosiers, 24 (20:33).

The race, put on by the Main Street Association of East Greenwich, was dedicated to Meredith Nelson, who died last summer. Nelson, who owned Organization Plus race timing service, was a big help to Turkey Trot organizers Amy Moore and Michelle Clark.

"She passed away this summer and provided us a lot of help with learning the ropes when it came to learning how to be race directors," said Clark.

Profits from the race will go to Youth to Youth's East Greenwich chapter. Youth to Youth is a community-based drug prevention and youth leadership program.
