Letter to the Editor: Bell Ringing For Newtown

We believe there has already been too much silence about gun violence in our country.

To the Editor,

On December 14, one year will have passed since the tragic day in Newtown, Conn., when 20 young children and six women lost their lives at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Please join the R.I. chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America for our “No More Silence” event at the First Unitarian Church of Providence on 1 Benevolent Street from 9:15 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. The typical response to such tragedies has been to hold “moments of silence.” We believe there has already been too much silence about gun violence in our country.

The program will include remarks from gun safety advocates, Central Falls Mayor James Diossa (a member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns), Rev. Don Anderson (Executive Minister, R.I. State Council of Churches), and Congressman Cicilline, as well as a performance by the Gordon School handbell ensemble. At 9:35 a.m., bells statewide will ring for one minute in memory of those who lost their lives one year ago. Churches in East Greenwich, plus others in 10 more R.I. communities, will be ringing their bells then, so please take a moment to remember the thousands of victims affected by gun violence and resolve to speak out until meaningful action is taken to make our state and country safer.
