Middle Road Bridge Closes Monday

During its closure, traffic that normally would cross the bridge will be detoured along South County Trail, Division Street and Howland Road.

If you drive over the bridge that carries Middle Road over Route 4, get ready for a new reality come Monday.

The bridge is closing and will close for about two months as the state Department of Transportation spearheads work as part of a $2.9 million contract with Cardi Corporation to fix key structures in nine Rhode Island cities and towns.

The bridge, originally built in 1969, will undergo deck, joint and sidewalk repairs.

The bridge should reopen to traffic by the end of the summer.

During its closure, traffic that normally would cross the bridge will be detoured along South County Trail, Division Street and Howland Road.

Signs will be posted and a detour map is available at www.dot.ri.gov/detourmaps.

Town officials said they're ready for the closure and have developed plans to ensure first responders and police have the quickest routes around the bridge closure's affected areas.

Work on the bridge will include some lane closures overnight on Route 4.
