Missing the insanity of theater tech crew

Drama is one of those all-consuming things — one of those things that completely owns you. One of those things that keeps you up until the late hours of the night. It’s one of those things that you begin to dream about, until you can’t escape. There were days when I stayed at the high school from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. There were days when I was completely covered in paint and sawdust and the smell of underground (it’s a scary place for those that haven’t been). There were days when I wasn’t sure if I was awake or asleep.

I miss it. Kind of a lot.

The play finished at roughly exactly 9:45ish on Saturday, Feb. 4. That doesn’t include clean-up, but that doesn’t matter. By 2:02 p.m., Monday, Feb. 6, I was lost without it. Was I supposed to go home? At a normal hour? Insanity.

I wasn't actually even in the play. I was part of tech crew and it has been one of the best extracurriculars I’ve ever joined. In this year itself, we built a bed with 20 downey mattresses made of pool noodles, PVC, and adhesive spray — LOTS of adhesive spray. We painted rock walls 16 feet tall. We got t-shirts and took a Tech Tebow. We danced to the classics (The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, Michael Buble) and we made incoherent conversation due to lack of sleep.

The really cool thing about drama is that it's one of those universal things. In a school that can be really clique-y at times, it’s kinda cool to have one club that attracts everyone. I’ve met a lot of people I wouldn’t normally talk to through drama. This year especially, we were a whole drama club. It wasn't just the actors and the tech and the pit orchestra. We were all friends. Not in the OMG-let’s-spend-whatever-free-time-we-have-together thing. More of the I’ll-acknowledge-you-in-the-hallways-with-that-awkward-nod type deal. Sorry. End of season times make me sappy.

Now that tech is done (sadly), I get to focus on other fun things. Like SATs and college (whimper), prom and AP Exams. The days are getting longer, the weather is warming up (sort of), and the first semester is over. Spring is on its way, and I have decided to make a couple reforms for the second semester. I'm determined to keep my room clean for more than one week, parallel park perfectly, and practice the piano more than five minutes before my lesson. And my most important change? Listen to a new song everyday.
