Avenger Football, The Concession Stand Opens & More

Five things you need to know about East Greenwich today, Sept. 9.

Blood Drive: Swift Community Center is hosting the Rhode Island Blood Center this afternoon, as it has been every other month recently. The timing this month - just two days before the tenth anniversary of 9/11 - makes it a powerful time to give a little of yourself to help out someone in need. From 1 to 5 p.m.

Hanaford Back-to-School Picnic: After a washout of a week, today holds more promise for a pleasant outdoor picnic for all Hanaford families. Bring your own picnic or buy a hotdog from Pop. There will be an ice cream truck on hand too, and mums for sale! From 5 to 7 p.m.

Avenger Football: It’s the first game of the season, and a home game too boot. EGHS faces Exeter/West Greenwich, coming of an Injury Fund win over North Kingstown last week. Be sure to check out the grand opening of the Concession Stand while you’re at the game. All proceeds go right back into the EGHS athletics programs. Kick off is at 7 p.m.

Trash Collection delayed one day: Because of the Labor Day holiday, if your trash is usually picked up on Friday, it will be picked up on Saturday this week. In addition, the town’s Dept. of Public Works continues to pick up storm debris as it is able. They ask that you leave it at the curb like you do your trash.

Weather & tides: It may be hard to believe, but there’s no rain in the forecast today. Instead, the sun is supposed to appear and temperatures are predicted to top out at 80 degrees. Woo hoo! High tides will be at 6:19 a.m. and 6:49 p.m.; low tides will be at 12:13 a.m. and 12:07 p.m. Sunrise is at 6:19 a.m.; sunset is at 7:06 p.m.
