Cove Commission, Philosophy Club Meetings & More

Five things you need to know about East Greenwich today, Sept. 8

Meadowbrook PTG meeting: The first Parent-Teacher Group meeting of the new school year takes place this morning at the school, starting at 9:30.

Cove Commission meeting: On the agenda is an update of the Cove Commission’s website, and the situation with Harris Marina. The meeting takes place at Town Hall at 7 p.m. The agenda is attached.

EGHS Graduation Requirements night: EGHS will hold a Graduation Requirement Night for all parents and guardians of freshmen, sophomores and new students. The program will run from 6 to approximately 7:15 p.m. The focus of this orientation will be how the high school is meeting the new RIDE graduation regulations and what steps students must take in order to be an EGHS graduate.

Philosophy Club meeting: Smith's Castle, down Post Road in nearby North Kingstown, is the site of a talk by J. Stanley Lemons, Professor Emeritus of History at Rhode Island College, who will discuss Roger Willams and the issues surrounding the separation of church and state. Dr. Lemons is an expert on Roger Williams and African American History. He is also the church historian for the First Baptist Church in America. For more information, call Bob Houghtaling at 230-2246. 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.

Trash Collection delayed one day: Because of the Labor Day holiday, if your trash is usually picked up on Thursday, it will be picked up on Friday this week. In addition, the town’s Dept. of Public Works continues to pick up storm debris as it is able. They ask that you leave it at the curb like you do your trash.

It would be good to know that trash collection is going to be delayed ahead of time. 9am on the day you are expecting pick up is sort of after the fact.

Thanks for the comment. I've been running the same info all week but I know it's one of those pieces of info you can't repeat too much!

Maybe you should rename the column "4Things You Need To Know Today and 1 Ya Shoulda Known Yesterday"
Heather Larkin September 08, 2011 at 11:19 PM
it's always delayed a day on a holiday week.

Yes. It’s common knowledge. For people who are not already “in the know”, this information is useless at 9am the day of trash collection, especially if they have to be at work by 8 or 9 in the morning. A column should be able to stand on it’s own and not rely on the fact that the reader had a chance or enough interest to read similar “news” when it was publish earlier in the week. This information wasn't that interesting the second time around, so it should at least be timely enough to have some value.
