Feds Investigate Missing EG Mail

Businesses and residents downtown say mail service problems began in early June.

The U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General is investigating reports of mail dumping by a letter carrier, according to a spokesman. Residents and at least one business owner said the problems began in early June.

“We noticed earlier in June,” said East Greenwich Oil owner Steve DeLisle, noting they have customers who pay a portion of their yearly oil bill each month. EG Oil is located on Main Street. “We checked – it was close to 30 people, close to $6,000, that never came in.”

DeLisle said he knows of at least one bill his company didn’t receive as well. When he contacted the business, the person there said the bill had gone out in late May or early June.

“In all the years I’ve been here, this has never happened,” he said. “Once in a blue moon, someone will say they sent a check that never arrived, but that’s it.”

Residents of Peirce, Prospect, Spring, Queen and King streets have all reported missing mail, even as recently as this week.

He said people should report missing mail to the USPSOIG either online here any time or by phone, 888-877-7644, Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
