Five Things: Best Buddies Car Wash & Pirates

Your guide for life in East Greenwich today, Aug. 25.

Best Buddies Car Wash: The EGHS chapter of Best Buddies will be holding their annual car wash from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Eldredge Elementary School (101 First Ave.). Best Buddies is a nonprofit organization that helps to form one-to-one friendships. It is a great organization that benefits everyone involved and associated. The car wash is a fundraiser for our chapter – it is historically the most significant fundraiser of the year. We will wash cars and only ask for donations of any size. Any amount helps. All proceeds go to the chapter. The funds we collect will help to fund future events and fundraisers, chapter dues, and a leadership conference in the summer that our chapter president and one other member will attend.

Walk for the Animals: Grab your dog and join the Rhode Island SPCA for the 10th Annual Marvin Memorial Walk for the Animals at Goddard Park. The walk includes a one-mile stroll
through the beautiful, wooded trails of Goddard Park, the vendors, informational booths, obedience demonstrations, pet contests, raffles and more. Walkers can collect pledges to earn prizes and help support the animals at the RISPCA! There is a $20 registration fee for those who register today. www.rispca.com.

Symposium Books story hour: Come to Story Hour at Symposium Books! Every week we pick a new story and read it to the kids with animal crackers and fun!  Favorite stories are "No Matter What" and "Jungle Explorer."  Come early and help pick the story, and better yet, there is a 10% additional discount on everything in the store during story hour!

Pirates! at Smith’s Castle: Set sail for an adventure at Smith’s Castle in North Kingstown to see PIRATES! Against All Flags. Neal Kirk (aka Captain William Kidd) founder/commander of Free Men Of the Sea, a pirate living-history reenactment group, will display his exhibit of original and reproduction artifacts to depict the reality and myths about the Golden Age of Piracy. PIRATES! Against All Flags focuses on the pirates of the Red Sea trade that were common in New England from about 1690 to 1720. Get a glimpse into the fact and folklore of the pirates of long ago. View a variety of period weapons, an array of pirate flags, period coins, examples of what treasure pirates really sought, pirate books and movie costumes, types of punishments, and other essential pirate paraphernalia. If you love things piratical, you’ll enjoy this exhibit. Admission to the indoor PIRATES! exhibit is $8 adults, $3 children 6-12, and free for children under 6. Rated “Arrrr” for all ages! The exhibit will be available for viewing from noon to 4:00 p.m.
