Five Things: Blood Drive, Vacation

Your guide for life in East Greenwich today, Feb 19.

Blood Drive: The bloodmobile will be outside of Starbucks on Main Street this afternoon from 3 to 7 p.m. The R.I. Blood Center lost nearly 600 donations during last week’s blizzard, so donations are extra-appreciated!

Winter vacation week: February break can be a challenge. If you have a great winter vacation idea, please share it here.

Water Street closed: Water Street at the Barbara Tuft's Playground (Lion Street) will be closed 24 hours a day for approximately 5 weeks. No traffic will be able to pass because of the vertical trench sheeting that will be in the road. This construction is to replace the 90-year-old sewer main from the bottom of King Street to the Waste Water Treatment Facility. If you have any questions, contact the Department of Public Works at 886-8618.

Post your Events and Announcements on EG Patch: If you have something you’d like to see on the EG Patch calendar, upload it by clicking here and finding the “Add an Event” tab on the right. The Events Calendar is my go-to spot for the daily Five Things column. If you want to be featured in Five Things, make sure you post your items on the calendar! If you have something you’d like to post as an Announcement, you can do that by clicking here. I routinely post Announcements to the EG Patch home page.

Vacation head’s up: I’m away (really!) through Sat., Feb. 23. Asst. Regional Editor Patrick Luce will be manning the site in my absence. His email is patrick.luce@patch.com. But if you have something that can wait for my return, please do wait. I will have my phone but will be trying to not respond to work emails!

On Wednesday …

Fancy Nancy Tea Party: The Friends of the EG Free Library is hosting the Fancy Nancy Tea Party on Wednesday for boys and girls ages 4 to 8. Dress up in your favorite outfit and come have some fun. Blood Drive: The Bloodmobile will be parked outside of Dunkin Donuts at 2611 South County Trail on Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.  The R.I. Blood Center lost nearly 600 donations during last week’s blizzard, so donations are extra-appreciated!

Vacation suggestion: it's Families Play Free week at the Y. Here's the link to the schedule for Kent County Y. Burn some energy off at Open Gym, Family Swim or in the Active Family Center - try the Tread Wall, XBox or just play. http://www.ymcagreaterprovidence.org/Portals/0/Uploads/Documents/Kent/Schedules/Famililes%20Play%20Free%20Week%20Schedule%20February%202013.pdf

I always look for what's going on at local libraries. Warwick, Main Branch today:Tuesday, February 19th we have a special After School Storytime! Come listen to Tacky the Penguin stories by Helen Lester, make a Tacky craft, and have your picture taken with Tacky! For kids in grades K-3, In the Children's Library at 2pm. No registration required. Wednesday 2/20 10 to 1 pm at North Kingstown (100 Boone St) Do you know what a sea urchin eats, and what eats a sea urchin? Learn the answer and much more when the New England Aquarium sets up their traveling tide pool. Participants can handle and observe a wide range of live tidal pool animals from local waters. Stop in and enjoy the fun! This is a drop in program. No registration necessary. Also Wednesday at Cranstons' Main Branch (140 Sockanosset Rd) is Raptors of RI from 2:30 - 3:30.There are many hawks, owls and falcons that call Rhode Island their home. Join wildlife rehabilitators from the Born To Be Wild Nature Center and learn about these amazing Birds of Prey. Meet three raptor ambassadors and hear their remarkable stories. For families with children ages 5 and up. No registration is required. On Friday from 2-4 free showing of Frankenweenie. 2 things I enjoy about this library - they have tons of cd's and it's right near Whole Foods so I take the kids there for a slice of pizza afterwards.
