Five Things: Fire District, CWC & Blood Drive

Your guide for life in East Greenwich today, May 24.

Fire District meeting: On the agenda is approval of resolutions for the annual meeting and the 2013 fiscal year budget. The meeting is held in Council Chambers at 7 p.m.

Citizens Who Care meeting: The CWC meets monthly in the Community Room at the Police Department at 10 a.m. This is a dedicated group of parents and other residents who work to keep our kids safe.

Blood Drive at EGHS: The high school plays host to a Spring Blood Drive just before Memorial Day, when donations always drop, according to the RI Blood Center. You need to be at least 16 years old (with a note if you are not yet 18) and it helps if you drink lots of water beforehand. Give blood and you give the gift of life — it’s a great feeling! From 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (Except for you lacrosse players – you’ve got playoffs tonight! See below.)

Avenger Home Games: Both Boys and Girls lacrosse teams have their first playoff games today. The Girls meet Bay View at 4 p.m.; the Boys play Middletown at 6 p.m. Meanwhile, the Girls Fastpitch Softball team plays its second to last game of the regular season today, against Exeter/WG at 3:30 p.m.

Lifeguard certification test: DEM's Division of Parks and Recreation  administers conditional non-surf and surf lifeguard certification tests today, and again next month. Non-surf tests will be given from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 23, June 13 and June 28 at the Prosser Grove Picnic Area at Burlingame State Park in Charlestown. Surf tests will be given from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 24 and June 14 at Scarborough State Beach in Narragansett. To qualify for testing, all candidates must have successfully completed courses and hold valid cards in lifeguard training, first aid, and CPR that includes infant, child, and adult. Candidates also must be at least 16 years of age and must present a photo I.D. with verification of date of birth. Any candidate under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to sign the waiver/application form.
In case of inclement weather, candidates should call the facility where the tests are being given for any cancellation information: Burlingame State Park at 322-8910 and Scarborough at 789-2324.
