Five Things: Football Showdown!

Trash pickup: If your trash is usually picked up on Fridays, it will be picked up on Saturday. The remainder of the week will have a one-day delay. If you have storm debris, DPW asks you move it to the curb and they will pick it up as soon as they can. Yard waste pick up will resume next week and the Transfer Station will be open Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., but town officials ask you to keep storm debris separate, since the town will not have to pay the tipping fee for its disposal.

Teen Center: The Teen Center has provided a great place to hang out on Friday evenings for decades now. They meet at the gym at Eldredge School but you don’t have to play basketball to enjoy the camraderie. From 6 to 8 p.m.

Moms of Preschoolers @ Christ Church: MOPS, a program for moms of young children, meeting for encouragement, practical parenting advice and growth both personally and spiritually. MOPS will meet from 9:00 - 11:00am at the Christ Church Ministry Center, 61 Cedar Ave. Unit 1, every other Friday. Cost to register with MOPS International is $23.99 per year. There will also be a $30/semester fee for child care and supplies (all checks should be made out to Christ Church). 

Avenger Action: EG Football meets Middletown in a big showdown of the top two teams in Division III. The game's at home and starts at 7 p.m.

Give Wildlife a Brake Week: We’ve been a little preoccupied this week, but I’m reminded that in addition to being Superstorm Sandy week, it’s also Give Wildlife a Brake Week. The Humane Society of the United States asks us to slow down and be aware of wildlife activity as days get shorter and the end of Daylight Savings Time approaches (Sunday!). Vehicle-animal collisions can cause injury, death and car damage, and October through December is the worst time of year in many states for run-ins with deer.

Scouting for Food pickup Saturday! The Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts of Narragansett Council distributed food collection bags last Saturday and they will pick up the bags tomorrow, Nov. 3. Don't worry if you don't have the actual bag anymore. Any bag will do! Just leave it – with canned and dry goods only – outside your front door by 9 a.m. on Saturday. Most needed items are canned meats, soups, or stews, peanut butter, canned fruits and vegetables, beans, pasta, and pasta sauce. If it is more convenient, you may take your food donation to Walgreens.

Ordination, Installation At Westminster Unitarian: The installation and ordination of Ellen Quaadgras, Westminster Unitarian Church's 17th minister will take place in the Parish House on Sunday at 3 p.m. All are welcome to attend this special occasion in the life of the church. St. Luke’s Celebration of New Ministry: Fr. Tim Rich has been rector at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church since July, but Bishop Geralyn Wolf will be on hand Sunday to celebrate more than just the arrival of a new rector. In her last official visit, the Bishop will mark the beginning of a new chapter in the life of St. Luke’s and the community of East Greenwich.
