Five Things: Ramadan & Gina the Camel

Your guide for life in East Greenwich today, July 9.

Ramadan begins: The holiest month in the Islamic faith – Ramadan – starts today and lasts through Aug. 8, according to the Fiqh Council of North America. Eating and drinking is prohibited from sunrise to sunset; the evening meal breaking the fast is called Iftar.

Gina the Camel’s birthday: Roger Williams Park Zoo continues its Animal Birthday Party Club series with a celebration today of Gina the camel. Special activities go from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Weather: Better. Highs in the mid-80s, I’m told. Fingers crossed. But if you are in need of free AC, Swift Community Center is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

On Wednesday …

Brown Bag Lunchtime Concert: EG Parks & Recreation hosts this monthly lunchtime music series on the lawn at Town Hall. Bring a bag lunch, grab a bite to eat from a local restaurant and listen this month to Atwater & Donnelly (Next month, on Aug. 14) the Ken Vario Quartet will perform. The music starts at noon.

On Thursday …

Free pre-concert BBQ at St. Luke’s: If you’re planning to attend the concert at Academy Field (see below) you can stop by St. Luke’s for dinner first. The meal is open to all and is free.

Live Music on Academy Field: One of the best parts of summer in EG are the free Thursday evening concerts at Academy Field, located next to the Swift Community Center, for the Summer Concert Series sponsored by the EG Parks & Recreation Department. Each week a different performer is featured. This week features Illusions Band. All ages are welcome to attend. Bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on. In case of rain the concert will be take place in the Swift Gym. There is no admission fee or pre-registration required. Leave pets at home. (There is no performance next week.) From 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Summer's End needs our help: Summer’s End is the concert on the Friday of Labor Day weekend that’s everyone’s favorite East Greenwich event. But we need to help make it happen. The Summer’s End organization – SAFO – is looking for volunteers and for donations. You can read all about it here.
