Five Things: Victory Day, Market Day

Today is Victory Day: A holiday in Rhode Island and no other state, so let’s take a moment to be grateful for a Monday holiday in August (if you’re lucky enough to get the day off, that is!). It memorializes the day Japan surrendered to the Allies, marking the end of World War II. State government offices are closed today. Federal offices, such as the U.S. Post Office, are open.

EG Farmers Market: Whether you need some tomatoes, tacos, or tea biscuits, Academy Field by Rector Street is the place to be from 3 to 6 p.m. today. Not sure if there will be live music today too but judging by past Mondays, there’s a better than 50 percent chance! You’ll find easy parking in the lot by Swift Community Center and St. Luke’s.

The Republican Town Committee, together with EG Patch, is holding a debate between GOP candidates for the state House Dist. 30 seat long held by the now retiring Bob Watson on Thursday, Aug. 23, at the Varnum Armory. Weather: It will be another nice August day, hot but not merciless, with a high around 85 degrees. We’ve been pretty darn lucky this summer, compared to much of the country. Thank you, o weather god. We are grateful!
