Historic Preservation, A Market & More

Five things you need to know about East Greenwich today, Oct. 17

EG Farmers Market: It’s the second-to-last market of the season, so get over there to pick up some fall staples like butternut squash, pumpkins and apples. The pizza will be baking and you can get some hot coffee from Steve, the Coffee Guy, as well as baked goods from both Seven Stars and EG’s own Wild Harvest Breads. From 3 to 6 p.m. at Academy Field right by Rector Street. The easy place to park is the St. Luke’s parking lot.

EG Historic Preservation meeting: The guest speakers, Kathy Fandetti and Dan Ulrich, will tell the story of Allen-Madison House in North Kingstown, an historic treasure that dates to 1801. Located near Allens Harbor, the house contains a keeping room, a beehive oven and an attached one-room schoolhouse.  Though it has been boarded up for many years, our speakers will tell of efforts by the Friends of the Allen-Madison House to restore the building and open it for public use. The meeting will be held at 110 King St. and begins with a potluck supper at 6:30 p.m. All are welcome but contact Susan Curado at 884-4643 for reservations.

EGHS home games: Girls Soccer will play Scituate and Girls Tennis will play Coventry, both at 3:30 p.m. today. The Boys Soccer team will play Narragansett (a game postponed from last week) at 6:30.

Food Cupboard open: Anyone in need of emergency food is encouraged to stop by the friendly folks at the Interfaith Food Cupboard, which is housed at St. Luke’s Church on Peirce and Church streets. Or drop off a donation. From 9 to noon.

Weather & tides: The weather will be partly sunny and breezy, with temperatures in the 60s. High tide will be at 11:45 a.m.; low tides will be at 4:36 a.m. and 5:22 p.m. Sunrise is at 6:59 a.m.; sunset is at 6:02 p.m.
