Kayaking Up The Green River: Just Me & The Birds

Our kayak had been sitting unused for more than a year and our paddle was nowhere to be found when I decided last month it was time to get that craft back in the water.

I borrowed a paddle (thanks Sherrie!) and took the kayak to Sandy Point, the launching point for my trip up the Green River, that tributary with Potowomut on one side and Pojac Point on the other.

On the way over from Sandy Point to the river's opening, I passed maybe 10 people out quahogging in the low tide waters. Waist deep in water, they were doing well from what I could see. The area had just reopened to quahoggers after some rainy days.

I paddled into the river, with the ridiculously beautiful campus of Rocky Hill School on my right. I was the only one around. Except the birds – herons, swans, cormorants, ducks, osprey. The river narrows and draws you in. I kept thinking, it's time to turn around, but I kept paddling.

I made it almost to the Forge Road bridge before turning around, getting the benefit of the wind now at my back. I was grateful for that, since my arms were out of kayak shape.

One of the great things about kayaking? Getting in and out of the water is fast and easy. I pulled up onto the beach back at Sandy Point, sat on a towel I'd left behind and enjoyed the view from the shore.

Ah, summer in Rhode Island!
