Resolving To Run 1,200 Miles In 2011, She Makes It With 5 Days To Spare

“It is a lot of miles,” says Camille Speca.

New Year’s resolutions are easy to make and even easier to break, since at least the making part requires conscious thought. But Camille Speca, who lives in the Hill & Harbour district, kept her resolution to run 1,200 miles in 2011. She ran her 1,200th mile on Dec. 26, five whole days early.

“I’ve been running for a long time,” Speca said earlier this week. “I just wanted to make a goal and see how much I could do. I don't know why I picked 1,200, I just figured 100 a month would be a good goal.”

A good goal, maybe, but no easy feat, since 1,200 miles a year works out to just under 3.3 miles a day. Every day.

“It was kind of half hearted in the beginning but then I realized I was doing it,” Speca recounted. This being 2011, she credits a phone app with helping to keep her motivated. “I got this app on my phone last November and it tracks everything.”

The app - Cardio Trainer - uses the gps on your phone (that is, if you have a phone with gps) and it tells you what your pace is as well as how many steps you’ve taken. In January, Speca ran 140.5 miles - “I was gung ho” - most of it on the treadmill at the gym because of all the snow and ice.

“I never had an excuse not to run,” she said of her decision to join a gym.

Nonetheless, her mileage dropped off in the spring. In April, Speca ran 79 miles and in May, 76. By August, however, she was back up to 140 miles and she realized she could do it.

“I’ve got a few runs in town. My usual run is about 6 miles. The shortest is 4 and the longest is 8,” she said. "I enjoy it a lot, so it's not really as hard as it sounds. I especially like running when I am traveling because it gives me alone time and I get to see the sights and stop where I want and check things out.”

By early December, Speca knew she would make her goal and on Dec. 26, she made it.

For 2012, Speca will keep running, but has decided to dial back the mileage a bit, having begun recently to work with weights. So, maybe only 1,000 miles in 2012.

She highly recommends using a tracking device like the Cardio Trainer phone app. "Its definitely gives you the motivation."

Do you have a resolution in mind for 2012? Tell us what it is.
