Snowy Saturday Predicted: Ready, Set, Shovel

Rhode Islanders can expect the first substantial snowfall of the season Friday night into Saturday as forecasters are predicting 3 to 6 inches of snow.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Saturday between 2 a.m. and 6 p.m. for all of Rhode Island and parts of Massachusetts and Connecticut. Flakes will begin to fall just after midnight with the bulk of the snow falling from mid morning into early afternoon.

Officials warn that snow is expected to accumulate quickly due to the already cold ground. Untreated surfaces will also become slippery. Motorists are encouraged to allow extra time to reach their locations. 

It's been a bizarre winter thus far, with higher-than-normal temperatures and a curious lack of snow. According to the Providence Journal's piece that ran Friday, Providence had only seen about 2.7 inches of snow as of Thursday. Charlie Foley of NWS states we would have expected "15.5 inches" by now. This time last year, we'd had 23.9 inches.
