Victory Day, Running Camp & More

Five things you need to know about East Greenwich today, August 8.

EG Running Academy: Today marks the first day of the EG Running Academy, a camp to foster the love of running in youth people. If you have a child who loves to run, or maybe just have a child with a bit of extra time on her hands, head over to EGHS this morning. The camp is from 9 a.m. to noon all week long.

East Greenwich Farmers Market: Today may be a state holiday, but the EG Farmers Market knows no holidays - it’s here to deliver fresh produce and other products every Monday afternoon between 3 and 6 p.m. into the fall. Yay!

Victory Day: Rhode Island has the singular distinction of being the only state in the union to celebrate Victory Day. It was, until recently, known as Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day) - it marks the anniversary of the Allies’ victory over Japan during World War II. It followed the dropping of the devastating atomic bomb on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima on August 6 and Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. These days, most Rhode Islanders celebrate a three-day weekend in August as much as victory over Japan, a longtime ally now. State offices are closed, federal offices (i.e. the post office) are open.

Soccer registration: Okay, you’ve been meaning to sign up your child for fall soccer but you just haven’t gotten around to it. The good news is that you still can. But not for much longer - registration closes one week from today.

Weather & tides: High temperatures will be in the mid-80s today and it will be humid. High tide will be at 4:13 p.m.; low tides will be at 8:59 a.m. and 11 p.m. Sunset is at 7:56 p.m.
