East Greenwich Historic Preservation Society Monthly Meeting

C. Morgan Grefe is the guest speaker at the monthly meeting of the East Greenwich Historic Preservation Society on Monday, September 16.  Dr. Grefe is the Director of the Rhode Island Historical Preservation Society.  In addition to describing the story of the Historical Society, she will display the carved wooden figure of a white male prisoner that once decorated the front of the Old Jail Building, EGHP Society headquarters.

At one time sculptures of a white and a black male prisoner appeared on either side of the front door.  They were lost; the RI Historic Society obtained the  sculpture of the white prisoner and will not return it to East Greenwich.  The EGHP Society is having the two sculptures reproduced and they will be mounted on the front of the building in the spring.

Monday's meeting begins with a potluck supper at 6:30; Dr Grefe's program begins at 7:30.  The meeting is free and open to the public at the Old Jail, 110 King Street.  Call Sue Curado at 884-4643 or e-mail her at lencu@cox.net for more information.
