East Greenwich Historic Preservation Society Monthly Meeting

At the monthly meeting of the East Greenwich Historic Preservation Society on Monday, November 18th, Chester Browning will tell about Poor Farms and how they evolved into state institutions like the Ladd School and Zambarano Hospital.  Poor Farms were 19th century institutions where impoverished residents could get local food and shelter in exchange for whatever work they could perform.

Chester Browning is a retired photographer for the RI State Police.  He created a database of state pauper cemetaries.  His research included a study of state poor farms.  He is a volunteer archivist for the RI Airport Corporation.

The meeting begins with a pot luck supper at 6:30; Mr. Browning's program begins at 7:30.  The meeting is free and the public is invited to attend.  Call Sue Curado at 884-4643 or e-mail her at lencu@cox.net for reservations.
