Kentish Guard Annual Inspection
The Kentish Guards will be conducting their Annual Inspection on Academy Field (where they first drilled in 1774) on Tuesday evening, August 20th, starting about 6:10 pm. The brief but colorful ceremony is a very ancient military ritual wherein the troops are inspected and the authority of the inspector is acknowledged. The inspector, in this case, is Major General Kevin McBride, the Adjutant General of Rhode Island (or his representative if an emergency calls him away). The Kentish Guards are not a re-enactment unit, but the actual military company that was chartered in 1774 with Nathanael Greene as one of their founding members; as such, it is still on the books as a legal military organization, recognized by the State of Rhode Island. The ceremony will also have music provided by the Kentish Guards Fife and Drum Corps, one of the leading fife & drum corps in the nation. The general public is welcome to view the ceremony and the short parade (from Academy Field to the Kentish Guard Armory on Peirce Street) which will occur at the end of the ceremony.
