"Scouting for Food Pick-up Day in East Greenwich"

Boy Scouts will be out in East
Greenwich collecting food for the needy, in the annual “Scouting
for Food” program.

On Saturday morning October 26, Scouts will begin
distributing plastic bags, by attaching them to the door knobs of people’s
homes.

The following Saturday, November 2, Scouts will begin
collecting bags of food from people’s doorsteps.

In East Greenwich, both
Troop 1 and Troop 2 Scouts will be helping.

“This is a true service project of Scouting, where these
young men can help give back to their community,” said Paul Pontarelli, an
Adult Leader in Troop 1. Scouts earn community service hours which help them
earn rank advancements.

People are asked to donate non-perishable foods. Cans of
soup and tuna, along with boxes of pasta and cereal are always welcome. Donors
should put the food out on their stoop in the plastic bags, before 9 a.m. on
Saturday November 2.

All food is then boxed at the Varnum Armory, and is taken to
the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. “Scouting for Food” is the second largest
food collection drive in the United
States every year. The East
Greenwich collection usually brings in about 10,000 pounds of
food. Please give generously!
